Kickstand Guide

Kickstands usually are included as standard equipment on new bicycles. If you don’t have a kickstand, this guide may help you decide which one to get. AtranVelo offers a broad range of kickstands designed for entry-level riders to cycle connoisseurs. Our aluminum kickstands will keep your bike standing upright for years. Find out which kickstand is right for your bike.

Center Mount

These kickstands are mounted on the chainstay near the pedals and require a mounting plate. You can attach one without a mounting bracket, but you need to be very careful as you can damage the chainstay if you screw the bolts too tight.

Center Mount with Bracket

Center mount kickstands come in a single leg and a double leg option. Some bike tourers prefer the double leg option as it spreads the weight on the bike evenly and is generally more stable.

HV (KSA 40) Rear Mount

Rear kickstands are mounted on the chainstay near the center of the rear wheel. Check your bike to see if you need an HV (KSA 40) or DV (KSA 18) mount. The attachment points for HV mounts are a bit wider apart than DV.

Measure Distance from Bike Frame to the Ground

Many of our kickstands are adjustable and fit on most bikes, but to be 100 % sure it does, there is a simple way to measure. Put the bike on a hard surface and lean slightly to the left. We recommend a 6-8° tilt. Use a yardstick to measure the distance from the attachment points (Center, HV, DV) on the bike’s frame to the ground. This measurement is the shortest kickstand you should buy. Have a friend help you to make sure you measure correctly. If you intend to park your bike on soft surfaces like dirt, we recommend getting a slightly longer kickstand since it can sink slightly. However, a kickstand that is too long will not hold your bike steady on hard surfaces.
